Are You Ready to Spring Ahead?!
It is time to “Spring AHEAD”!
In the US, we will turn our clocks ahead one hour this coming weekend at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 12th, 2023 and in Europe, it is on March 26, 2023.
Spring is here! Time for some extra daylight and a dose of Vitamin D from the sunshine.
I always want to give you reliable and actionable information to prepare for time changes. Please note that this Spring Time Change can be a tricky transition. Please be patient as it can take typically 5-10 days for the your body's natural circadian rhythm to regulate.
Think of it this way. Your child's body is used to a 7:30pm bedtime and come 3/12/23, it will now be 8:30pm
To make the transition easier, I have outlined some tips to help your child to easily move through this time change. There are many options to manage this Spring 2023 Time Change.
Focus on NAPS. This time change goes easier if your child is getting adequate naps so that they aren’t overtired going into bedtime.
Be prepared for your child's bedtime to feel earlier, since it actually is earlier. Remember, we’re jumping ahead a full hour, so what used to be 6:00 p.m. is now 7:00 p.m. — but it will still feel like 6:00 p.m. to your child.
Exposure to morning light before 10am for 30 min will help “reset” the body's circadian rhythm.
I recommend that you choose between two transition methods for Daylight Savings Time.
Transition Method 1: Pretend that Nothing Has Changed on March 12th.
Best method for families with “early rising” tendencies (up before 6am)
Best method for busy parents who already feel “rushed” at bedtime.
If you have a child that actually wakes up before 6am, then this may be the right method for you. This method is probably the easiest for most families, as you will follow your daily routine according to the clock, but everything will be pushed ahead one hour.
If you choose this method do the following:
Move your clock ahead an hour on Saturday night 3/11/23, and proceed with your normal day Sunday.
Note: be aware that following this “do nothing approach” means your child will lose an hour, which has the potential to create a struggle at bedtime, because bedtime will be a full hour earlier than it was last night.
Because your baby or toddler is not aware that the time has changed, they will wake up at their normal time (hopefully), but instead of 6:00 a.m., it will be 7:00 a.m. (see what I mean about solving that pesky early rising issue?).
However, don't let your child sleep past 7:30 or 8am or else bedtime will be harder.
Proceed with your normal day, and be sure that your meals and naps, and bedtime are at the appropriate time (you may have to watch the clock).
Remember that your baby will be going to bed at their “regular time”. For example, if your baby is used to a 7:00 p.m. bedtime, put them to bed at the NEW 7:00 p.m. (which was previously 6:00 p.m.). It is very possible that meals and naps will fall into place naturally with this method, but be prepared that your child may not actually be tired at bedtime yet. Remember, they don’t understand why they’ve lost an hour, and it’s suddenly still light out at bedtime, so you may have to be a bit flexible or now might be the time to install those room darkening shades.
Transition Method 2: Make DAILY adjustments
Best for families that know the time change will be hard on their kiddo
Best for families who feel more secure when they “plan in advance”
About 5-7 days before the time change, begin putting your child to bed 10-20 minutes earlier, moving the time back every day or few days until you reach a full hour. So, if your child has a 7:00 p.m. bedtime, you want to begin with bedtime at 6:40 p.m. then 6:20 p.m., then 6:00 p.m.
Be consistent as possible with your baby’s food and sleep schedule. This means that you need to shift all meals, snacks, and naps earlier as well.
Watch the clock to stay on the new schedule of 30 minutes earlier.
Don’t forget to wake your child a bit earlier to help with this transition schedule.
After about a week, your child should be back at their 7:00 p.m. bedtime.
Adjust all meals, snacks, and naps to fit the “new” schedule on the same day that you shift to your child’s new, fully-adjusted bedtime.
Here is an example: If your baby or toddler’s bedtime is 7 pm, it will look like this:
Wednesday 3/8/23: 6:40 pm bedtime
Thursday 3/9/23: 6:30 pm bedtime
Friday: 3/10/23 6:20 pm bedtime
Saturday 3/11/23: 6:10 pm bedtime
Sunday 3/12/23: 7 pm bedtime (new time—old time will be 6 pm)
Keep in mind that the goal is to be back to your baby’s normal bedtime (and routine) in just a few days (some children may take a bit longer, so don’t fret if your child takes a week or so).
Tips for Parents:
Eliminate all caffeine after 1:30 p.m. this week in order to make it easier to go to bed earlier.
If possible, also avoid alcohol this weekend, which negatively affects sleep.
Go to bed 15 minutes earlier than usual on the Thursday 3/9/23.
On Friday 3/10/23 go to bed 30 minutes earlier than usual.
On Saturday 3/11/23 try to go to bed 45 minutes earlier than your usual bedtime (notice a pattern?).
Whichever method you choose, it’s important to remember that your baby’s internal clock is used to Standard Time. You may need to revert to some sleep training methods for a few days to help ease the time change. “Springing forward” also means that nights are shorter, which may be an issue for some children who are used to dark winter nights. Remember, every child is different, and your little one will adjust, but don’t fret if it’s not overnight (some kiddos can take a few weeks to adjust!). Prepare for the transition to take a few days, and watch for those sleep cues that will tell you when your child is tired and ready to sleep!
Overview On How To Handle Daylight Saving Time:
Decide which Daylight Savings sleep transition method you want to use to help your child adjust.
Take your baby’s internal clock into account and watch for sleepy cues.
Check to see if light is an issue, and consider purchasing room-darkening shades for bedtime, but also expose them to morning light in that first week to “reset” their internal clock.
Most importantly, be flexible and patient. A time change is often hard on kids and adults alike. Readjustment can take about 5-10 days. Just be mindful of the clock and your schedule.
Keep evening plans calm and watch for sleepy cues. Dim the lights in house and avoid screen-time that can be too stimulating.
If needed, use your preferred sleep training method to help encourage sleep and help your baby get the rest he/she needs.

Bad advice? A solution is still possible!
As first-time parents a lot of value is placed on the advice from the Pediatrician's office, BUT, what do you do when the advice doesn't work?
What happens when you ask for help, but are more stressed-out and worse-off after following their guidance?
That's the massive struggle Kirutika and his wife faced after "pushing through" non-stop crying with the Cry-It-Out method suggested by their pediatrician with no support or success.
The couple was left with miserable 2 year old sleep problems and they thought maybe it was just a toddler sleep regression or they were just hoping their daughter would just outgrow bad sleep and who could blame them! All they wanted to know was how to stop rocking toddler to sleep at bedtime and middle of the night.
The rocking, bouncing and walking up and down the hall with frequent wake ups was so physically demanding that this couple was experiencing back pain. After 28 months of sleepless nights, a neighbor (and my former client) recognized this couple's exhaustion and recommended Blissful Baby Sleep Coaching's Gentle process and the couple called me immediately to get started.
I am so happy this family took their neighbor’s advice and reached out for help! Now Life is way better than they could have dreamed prior to sleep coaching.
After 2 years, the couple was able to FINALLY watch a movie together again, while the toddler was sleeping. Mom is back to work and Dad has time to return to exercising in the evening! This family experienced a TOTAL FAMILY SLEEP TRANSFORMATION!
Watch their story in the video below to see how working with THE RIGHT SLEEP METHOD with the RIGHT COACH has been totally transformative for their entire family!

Kirutika and Somasundaram want people to know:
"There is an option, you don't need to stress about sleep or struggle through sleepless nights. Joanna is really responsive and open to questions. She helps you understand your baby's behavior and temperament. Her method is like magic, a customized systematic plan that's really gentle. Sleep coaching was life changing for us."
Thank you for watching Kirutika and Somasundaram's story and I hope this inspires you to realize that it is possible to become a well-rested family.

Are Sleep Sacks Safe?
Are sleep sacks safe?
Yes! Sleep sacks are a great way to keep little ones warm while maintaining safe sleep practices.
Once a baby starts working on rolling, typically around 2 months old, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to stop using a swaddle for sleep. This is the perfect time to introduce the sleep sack. Sleep sacks are a wearable blanket, they help the baby feel contained while maintaining safe sleep practices. Sleep sacks allow babies to move freely and can be used indefinitely. In order to maintain safe sleep practices, loose blankets, pillows, stuffed toys, bumpers, and other soft items should be kept out of the sleep space.
A sleep sack can keep toddlers in the crib and the whole house sleeping! Sleep sacks are great even for toddlers who are at the age where they start trying to climb out of the crib. The sleep sack limits the ability of toddler to lift their legs over the crib railing. A climbing toddler can leave parents feeling exhausted.
Considering transitioning to a toddler bed? The transition to the big kid bed can be a massive vulnerability for sleep regression. I always recommend keeping children in a crib as long as possible which is often ages 3.5 or 4 and a sleep sack can help extend the amount of time a child sleeps safely in a crib.
Sleep Sacks can be incorporated in the bedtime routine. They are a great visual cue to babies and toddlers that it's time to wind down and go to sleep.
Sleep Sacks have many benefits including:
Keep baby warm
Maintain safe sleep practices
Help baby feel safe and secure
Discourages climbing by limiting a child’s ability to lift their leg over the crib railing
Visual cue of bedtime when used in the bedtime routine

Sleep is Bliss, Let's Get you more!
Do you have a second child? Do you want to do things differently?
I met my client, Hiren, back in 2020 when their son was 15 months old and was struggling with sleep and the parents were exhausted. They reached a point where they were not able to function during the day, their jobs were getting affected, they were not able to focus or give their son quality time because of sleepless nights.
Mom wanted a solution and started researching and found Blissful Baby Sleep Coaching. It all sounded like a dream to these exhausted parents and they were skeptical. However, after speaking with Joanna, these parents liked how the Gentle Sleep Coaching process works and Joanna gave them the confidence to take a leap of faith because they had nothing to lose!
This family experienced a Total Family Sleep Transformation with their 15 month old son. So of course, when their 2nd child was born, a baby girl, they trusted the process and want to move ahead with sleep coaching SOONER than 15 months since they knew the process works!
Now that Hiren is familiar with the different sleep training methods, he is familiar how early you can sleep train a baby safely. Because his toddler's bedtime routine is so easy now, they knew they could do gentle sleep training at 6 months so that they could enjoy adult time in the evenings.
Here are some comments from Hiren on this thinking when assessing to move ahead with baby sleep training his daughter 9 months earlier than he did with his son.
"We knew the minimum age you start sleep coaching is around 6 months when the baby is able to turn both ways front to back, back to front. As soon as she started doing that, we were ready. Why wait 15 months? Joanna's data driven approach looks through the child's entire day and picks nuggets that parent's might miss and helps us make those adjustments and help the child sleep through the night."
I am so happy this family knows I am a reliable resource and I offer a non-judgmental space to access sleep support! Watch their story in the video below to see how working with THE RIGHT SLEEP COACH has been totally transformative for their entire family!
Hiren C, 15 month old son, 6 month old daughter | Click image or here to watch video.
This is important! Hiren wants other exhausted parents to know:
"Don't be scared. It's actually a beautiful process. You go through this process, which is so gentle and the results are there to see. I guarantee that if you follow the systematic approach which caters to your kid, it's designed for you to succeed. I cannot recommend this enough, it changed our life."
Thank you for watching Hiren's story and I hope this inspires you to realize that it is possible to become a well-rested family.

Sleep Success Story: Confused and Exhausted!
This couple's life was a complete state of chaos day and night because of sleep deprivation. Their son struggled with sleep and after 2 years Divya and Terence realized this was not something that would solve itself. They reached a breaking point after trying everything in their arsenal for 2 weeks straight and NOTHING would get their son to sleep!
Just like many other families I've worked with, Mom thought "I'm the mom, I should be able to figure this out myself." I want to reiterate what I tell all of my clients, sleep is a learned skill, it is not something that you are born knowing how to do. A co-worker told them about Blissful Baby Sleep Coaching and with skepticism the couple decided to try it. As Dad says "I stand corrected". This family experienced a TOTAL FAMILY SLEEP TRANSFORMATION and they are ALL enjoying the benefits of a well-rested family. Their son learned lifelong healthy sleep habits and the couple is enjoying the strong bond with their son that sleep coaching helped develop and the uninterrupted time in the evening to focus on other things.
Watch their story in the video below to see how working with THE RIGHT SLEEP METHOD with the RIGHT COACH has been totally transformative for their entire family!

Divya and Terence have been talking me up at parties with other families and wants people to "Just call Joanna. It's not enjoyable to have un-organized chaos in your house from sleep deprivation. It impacts your daily life and just keeps building. It just impacts your relationship with your partner and child. You can't put a price on good sleep!"
Thank you for watching their story. I hope this inspires you to realize that it is possible to become a well-rested family.

Books You Want on Your Shelves!
Reading together can be such a special bonding moment with children and is often incorporated in a good bedtime routine because it is a nice calming activity. Reading with babies helps build their language and literacy skills naturally through play. It also helps them build reading skills that include turning the pages, talking about the story and making connections with their own world.
There are so many books on the market and let's face it, as parents not all of them are as enjoyable to read. I have put together a list of a few household favorites with beautiful stories and graphics that I never minded reading over and over again.
Poodlena By E.B. McHenry
This is a beautiful story that was a household favorite. Plus it gets bonus points for starring a Poodle!
Has Anyone seen Winnie and Jean? By E.B. McHenry
This is a great interactive read about runaway dogs!
Finklehopper Frog Cheers- by Irene Livingston
Another household favorite story about bullying! Great read for kids and it’s enjoyable for parents too!
On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman
This is a beautiful story with incredible illustrations. I love all books by Nany Tillman but this one is a favorite. It’s a great book to remind little ones how special they are and also a great gift!.
Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You by Nancy Tillman
This is another great Nancy Tillman book that talks about a parent’s love no matter how near, far or old they are. It’s such a sweet read.

I would love to hear what your family favorites are or maybe you enjoy some of too!

Sleep Success Story: Regressions & Milestones Call for Re-nurturing and Recalibrating Foundational Skills!
Sleep Regressions can be caused by milestones, illness, travel, and big life circumstances and the depth of the regression can be compounded by your child's temperament. Some kiddos are highly empathetic and sensitive to changes and thus, parents find that prioritizing sleep during the above listed regression triggers is paramount.
This was the case for my client's, Amy and Josh, whom I met back in 2019 when their son was 2 years old. Back then Dad very slowly, very calmly, very methodically sleep coached him to sleep success. The bond they formed during this sleep coaching process was incredible for the relationship with his son.
Now, their son is 5 years old and over the past 3 years, I have worked with this family through different regressions and challenges that have come up. There's no guilt, no shame, no concern, no worry in reaching out for help to do some detective work and recalibrate those foundational sleep skills. Children will often get back on track within 3-7 days. Remember, the sleep skills are already anchored. We just need to re-establish the right circumstances and right environment and right steps to help the child "remember" their sleep skills. Just like riding a bike. Once you learn, you don't forget, you just need confidence and a good bike path.
Mom and Dad are very science-based and drawn to the Gentle Sleep Coaching process. This child really benefited from the structure and consistency of sleep coaching with dad and the value both parents have placed on sleep. Amy and Josh always make sleep a priority and then inform their community of caregivers so their son has a village of people that understand him and can provide what he needs. It makes for a more harmonious household when all parents and caregivers are on the same page. The child feels happy and secure and bonded with everyone!
I am so happy this family knows I am a reliable resource and I offer a non-judgmental space to access sleep support! Watch their story in the video below to see how working with THE RIGHT SLEEP COACH has been totally transformative for their entire family, time and time again!
